The aim of this diploma thesis is to present the activities of
the Proba-tion and Mediation Service, especially one of the
options for alternative punishment, probation supervision. The
first chapter is dedicated to the introduction of the Probation
and Mediation Service and probation supervision, its scope and
historical development. The second part dis-cusses supervision
from the perspective of juveniles. The third chapter presents
probation supervision itself for adult offenders, how it works
and what it is imposed for. The fourth chapter discusses the
scope of probation supervision over offenders and the effect on
their further behaviour and prevention of recidivism. In the
penultimate part, the most significant recent amendment
regarding the abolition of proba-tion supervision is discussed,
and in the last chapter, supervision is compared with other
countries in the world, especially with our neigh-bours, or
with countries where probation itself originated, with regard
to its development on individual territories. At the end of the
work, the author evaluates individual characteristics, points
out problems and presents possible solutions de lege ferenda.
