Since its launch in 2015, CEITEC’s Multimodal and Functional Imaging Laboratory (MAFIL) has been accumulating experimental data from volunteer participants. Since 2014, the MAFIL laboratory at CEITEC has been taking volunteer measurements using medical devices, which chiefly consist of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. The imaging data from these devices, along with acquisition metadata and the personal details of volunteers, are stored in the PACS imaging system. Metadata regarding volunteers and their measurements are also stored in the laboratory's information system, MAFILDB.
Volunteers give the laboratory consent to process their personal data for a limited period of time. After this period, the data in PACS and in MAFILDB must be anonymized. The bachelor thesis aims to analyze the legal basis for processing this data, evaluate the present condition of the information system, and explore the PACS system and the DICOM protocol. Furthermore, the thesis shall analyze the laboratory’s requirements for anonymizing measurement metadata, and design a data model and system extension for the purpose of metadata anonymization.
The student shall implement anonymizing functionality into the information system according to the above design. In particular, anonymization shall cover metadata stored in both MAFILDB and PACS. The student shall then make the anonymizing functionality available to MAFIL through the system’s Web-based user interface. Moreover, MAFIL will be able to review upcoming obligations to anonymize metadata as well as a log of anonymization records for the purposes of legal requests and user accountability. The implemented anonymization functionality shall be tested on realistic data and include integrity checks to avoid the loss of valuable experimental data.
