This thesis focuses on the role of application problems in
upper secondary school mathematics education, specifically
within the context of grammar schools. Furthermore, it offers a
collection of 51 original, solved application problems that
will serve as the foundation for a forthcoming online database.
In the first, theoretical part, we define core concepts,
examine models of the application problem-solving process,
explore their classifications based on various criteria, and
finally, analyze the competencies that solving application
problems has the potential to develop. The second part of the
work discusses a questionnaire survey conducted among grammar
school teachers in the Czech Republic and teachers at
comparable types of schools in neighboring countries; it also
presents an analysis of application problems found in the most
frequently used mathematics textbooks for grammar schools. The
third and central part of this thesis consists of the
aforementioned collection of application problems designed for
the database.
