Anotace

Abstract

In this thesis, we study the spacecraft charging phenomena on Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO). To this end, a plasma and spacecraft model was developed using the SPIS simulation software. Operating satellites on VLEO is a topic that has, in recent times, been in the spotlight of both fundamental and applied research, because it has the potential to revolutionise telecommunications and Earth observation.

Zadání práce
In this thesis, the student will perform simulations of the interactions of dilute thermosphere plasma with a spacecraft operating on various very low Earth orbits (VLEO). To that end, numerical and physics models available within the SPIS software library will be utilised, especially particle-in-cell (PIC) and hybrid PIC-fluid codes. The student will perform a range of parametric studies, for example quantify the effect of background residual atmosphere at orbits between 120 and 400 km or quantify the effect of gas temperature or solar illumination. The key observables will be the overall plasma distribution and spacecraft charging. While such studies have been commonly done for satellites at low Earth orbits (LEO) and geostationary orbits (GEO), they have not been published for VLEO orbits. This is partly due to the fact that the SPIS library may not contain all functionalities to exactly describe VLEO conditions. Within the thesis, the student will also explore what are the potentially missing features and will work around them by simulating best-case and worst-case scenarios. Within this thesis, further development of SPIS is not envisioned, even though this will pose an interesting topic for potential follow-up research. The student will cooperate with the companies PlasmaSolve (simulation) and SpaceLabEU (VLEO spacecraft development) and will be provided necessary access to PlasmaSolve’s simulation infrastructure, software and previously acquired results related to VLEO spacecraft dynamics. The thesis is a very topical one - operating satellites on VLEO is nowadays in the spotlight of both fundamental and applied research, as it has the potential to revolutionise telecommunications, Earth observation and remote sensing areas.
