OSNOVA PROJEKTU

1. Vymezení řešené problematiky a základních pojmů (dle tématu práce)

The thesis will analyse the influence of Puritanism on individual characters, their motives and actions as well as other signs of this dogma in The Scarlet Letter, the most renowned work of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

2. Shrnutí dosavadního stavu řešení či poznání (stručná rešerše, východisko pro cíl práce, formulace výzkumných problémů apod.)

A number of works, especially in English speaking countries, have dealt with the topic of guilt and sin based on this novel. These works focused mainly on criticism of the Puritan society and belief. On the other hand, religious works dealing with Puritanism disregard a lot of facts and consider the Puritans almost perfect. This disproportion of opinions creates an interesting basis for the thesis.

3. Cíl práce

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the influence of Puritan belief on individual characters of the novel and their society and to assess the accuracy of the novel and nowadays’ perception of Puritanism with respect to historical and religious sources.

4. Pracovní postup (přístup k řešení, metody, techniky, nástroje apod.)

The first step is to read the novel critically and study materials from secondary sources dealing with Puritanism, their belief, values and attitudes. The next step is the text analysis focused on all signs of Puritanism mentioned in the novel and their comparison with secondary sources.

5. Organizační, materiální a finanční zabezpečení práce (časový harmonogram práce aj.)

Because of the lack of secondary sources related to this topic available in public libraries in the Czech Republic, it will be necessary to buy several books form English speaking countries. I will also use online periodicals available on the Masaryk University website. The main amount of work should be done in July and August 2012 with final completion in following months.

6. Předpokládané využití výsledků (způsoby prezentace, publikace apod.)

The results of the thesis can be interesting for all students of American literature and may be beneficial for both public and scholars.
