Web Certificate monitoring system

Anotace

V posledních pěti letech přešla řada webových stránek z nešifrovaného přenosu dat (HTTP) na šifrovaný (HTTPS). V této práci se snažím vytvořit snadno použitelný a nasaditelný nástroj pro monitorování webových certifikátů. Základní funkcionalitou je zasílání notifikací, když se blíží expirace certifikátu, nebo je detekován potenciální problém s nastavení SSL/TLS, ve snaze předejít výpadku služby.

Abstract

In the past five years, the standard for web communication shifted from unencrypted transmission (HTTP) to encrypted (HTTPS). This thesis aims to provide easy to deploy and easy to use tool for monitoring web certificates. When a certificate nears expiration or problems with SSL/TLS configuration are detected, notifications are sent to help prevent outages.

The focus of this topic is to build an open-source monitoring system for X.509 certificate monitoring similar to the https://www.qualys.com/certview/

The system enables users to register domains to the certificate monitoring. The monitoring system regularly checks the registered domains, analyzes corresponding certificates and produces reports and charts. The system will also notify the user about soon-to-expire certificates or misconfigured hosts to prevent downtime from expiring certificates. The email notification should be implemented.

The student can take inspiration from existing certificate scanning and monitoring systems.

The system will consist of a backend scanning part and a frontend presentation part. The backend can be implemented in Python3. The frontend part is left for the student decision, however modern technologies and frameworks should be used.

The open-source certificate monitoring solution will be a valuable contribution to the community as the adoption of certificates is still increasing and misconfigured host or non-working certificate renewal is often a cause of unpleasant downtimes.
