The present master's thesis examines the work Kleiner Mann – was nun? or Občánku, a co teď?, which was written by the German author Hans Fallada, from a translatological perspective. As Fallada, although a popular figure in the German-speaking world, has become almost forgotten in the Czech context, several chapters are devoted to his life and work, as well as to the literary movement Neue Sachlichkeit, within which he created. Particular attention is also paid to the historical development of Fallada's reception in the territory of today's Czech Republic. This is followed by an analysis of the novel’s composition, a summary of its plot, and a characterization of its protagonists. The core of the thesis consists of original translations of selected excerpts, accompanied by commentaries on a variety of translation-related phenomena — these take into account both the original text and the first Czech translation by Evženie Nová and Ivan Olbracht from 1933. Furthermore, part of the thesis summarizes and contextualizes the approach of these translators to certain issues, such as phraseology and the treatment of proper names.
