Poverty is defined as a deprivation of all necessary things people need in their lives, such as food, water, clothing, shelter and, according to the World Bank since 2011, it is defined as living under 1.9 USD per day. Due to the high number of people living below the poverty line, economists, politicians, academics and many others leaders shifted their focus to understand poverty to be able to effectively address its root causes and be able to lift people out of poverty. In 2000, heads of the states from 189 countries adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - 8 universal global goals that outlined the framework of the international development for 15 years, from 2000 until 2015. This was an important step for the international community, as for the first time in history the World formed a global partnership to reduce extreme poverty by 2015 introducing a set of goals with time-framed and quantifiable targets to monitor the progress. According to the UN reports of 2015, China was one of the most successful countries and was able to lift million people out of poverty; thus, as the most populated country in the World, significantly contributed to the fulfilling of the MDGs. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the frames and constructs the Chinese government is using when talking about the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals in China and what sort of images the Chinese government is using trying to report on the development connected to the meeting the MDGs in China. The method of this thesis is discourse analysis.
