Anotace
použitelnost teorie sociálních reprezentací (Moscovici, 2000) a
postupů budování zakotvené teorie (Strauss, Corbinová, 1999);
3. nabídnout v empirii zakotvené inspirativní postupy zvládání
faktu smrti, jež by byly použitelné v sociální realitě České
republiky.
Na předmět výzkumu pohlížím z perspektivy teorie sociálních
reprezentacích, jejímž hlavním zájmem je explorace sociálního
vědění a vzájemně propojených procesů komunikace a
skupin vycházel z výzkumných zjištění pilotního výzkumu a
komplementu. V České rupublice původně zvažovaná skupina
pacientů nebyla z důvodů organizačních a etických nakonec do
výzkumu zařazena. Volba odlišné kultury (Srí Lanky) byla vedena
osobním zájmem výzkumníka a zjištěními pilotního výzkumu.
individuálních a skupinových rozhovorů; 2. záznamy pozorování,
jednak introspekce výzkumníka a jednak jednání aktérů výzkumu;
institucí, především vztahu mnicha a laika.
V České republice je patrná menší velikost sdílených představ,
jejich větší roztříštěnost a heterogenita oproti Srí Lance,
přičemž osobně ohrožující aspekt smrti by v ČR vytvářel
kulturně servírované významy, představy a praktiky ověřuje svým
tradic. Pasivní pól osy pak oproti konzumaci rituálů na Srí
Lance znamená v sociální realitě České republiky buď neznámo a
(mindfulness, ang,; sati, páli), jejíž psychologické a
Creswell, 2007; Didonna, 2008). …víceméně
Abstract
„What comes to your mind, when you hear the word death? How do
you cope with the fact of your own mortality in your everyday
life?“ These are the basic research questions that the
respondents of research of Social representations of death in
the Czech Republic and in Sri Lanka were asked. Considering the
findings provided by the pilot´s research (Hytych, 2002b) in
oncology hospital department in the Czech Republic, the health
care professionals miss the possibility of sharing the topic of
death and an important fact for the coping with the fact of
death are the religious meanings. The fact said above supports
the other social scientists´statement: death disappears from
the public space or it is even becoming a taboo (Kastenbaum,
2000; Moscovici, 2000; Přidalová, 1998). Among other
consequences of this fact there is for example this phenomenon
to be mentioned: although more than 90 % of respondents wish
to die at home, more than 90 % of them die in fact in health
care or social care institutions (Haškovcová, 1998). The aims
of this dissertation are as follows: 1. to explore social
representations of death in the chosen cultures; 2. to verify
the usability of social representations theory (Moscovici,
2000) and the method of establishing the grounded theory
(Strauss, Corbinová, 1999) by the research in various cultures;
3. to offer the inspirative empirically grounded methods of
coping with the fact of death, that were applicable in the
social reality of the Czech Republic.
The research subject is observed from the perspective of social
representations theory. The main interest of social
representation is the exploration of social knowledge and the
mutually connected processes of communication and
representating. The social representations can be viewed as
common sense elements, that make familiar what is unknown for
us (Moscovici, 1984). The basic theory determines the chosen
methodological method of establishing the grounded theory. The
examined population consisted of a group of theravada buddhist
monks and their supporters in Sri Lanka, in the Czech Republic
these were the health care professionals, students preparing
themselves for this profession and their teachers. The purpose
of the social groups selection came out from the research
findings of the pilot´s research and also a reflection, that it
is meaningful to study such social groups, that are appointed
the statute of “death specialists” and their complement in a
given culture. Originally, a group of patients in the Czech
Republic was also considered, but it was not included in the
research for ethical and organizational reasons. The choice of
a different culture (Sri Lanka) was inspired by the personal
interest of the researcher and by the pilot´s research
findings. I have chosen a culture where a topic of death is a
common part of communication and where the meanings related to
religion are constituted in a different way. A field research
has been chosen as a research design. Its realization was
different in each of explored communities. While in Sri Lanka a
substantial part of research was carried out in a position of
“living in research” (Ratnapala, 1999), in the Czech Republic
this approach could not have been realized and I stayed in the
position of the participated observer. As a result, the
intensity of data acquired by observation in the Czech Republic
was much smaller, but it was balanced by a greater number of
research respondents (99 interview participants in the Czech
Republic versus 26 respondents in Sri Lanka). In explored
populations following data sources were used: 1. the recordings
of individual and group interviews; 2. the observations, both
the researcher introspection and the research
participants´actions; 3. relevant texts analysis which created
an additional research design. The validity control was based
on the triangulation method (Čermák, Štěpaníková, 1997).
The social representations of deatch in populations explored
are formed on the axes of axial coding, which showed themselves
to be relevant for both studied cultures. These axes are as
follows: 1. individual formulation of the problems versus
interpersonal sharing; 2. personally endangering aspect of
death versus meanings related to religion; 3. active coping
with the threat of death versus passive acceptance.
Apart from the mentioned research goals it made itself clear
that the research process in the Czech Republic itself had a
therapeutic impact in the sense of bringing the topic of death
back to the public space, especially when a method of focus
group (Morgan, 2001) was used. The Czech respondents shared
that the situation of focus sharing the topics related to death
was very uncommon for them, but in the end of interviews they
reflected on these four different benefits: 1. I am not alone
with death; 2. different ideas of other respondents can be
inspiring or incomprehensible, but they can be shared; 3.
sharing the fact of death supports the mutual closeness; 4.
sharing can reduce the anxiety provoked by the topic of death.
Respondents in Sri Lanka reflected upon the joy which was not
caused by opening the taboo, but it was given by the
interaction style they were not accustomed to from the local
monks. The fact of death is common in everyday communication in
Sri Lanka and it is shared interpersonally in the institutions
reproduced by culture, especially in the relationship between a
monk and a lay person.
In the Czech Republic a smaller number of shared ideas is
evident and also a greater fragmentation and heterogenity in
comparison with Sri Lanka can be observed. Moreover, the
personally endangering aspect of death would create a
collectively shared basis, which is not talked about, but which
can be agreed even silently; death is usually an unvoiced
dread. On the contrary in Sri Lanka there is a cultural store
of knowledge related to Buddha´s teaching which is widely
accepted, homogeneous and invoking respect and authority. This
reservoir offers both the explanations “how it works in the
world” and the skills “know-how” that are explicitly formulated
and used in everyday life.
On the pole of passivity there does not come to the individual
formulation of meanings related to religion, but the cultural
reservoir of knowledge is reproduced passively. On the
contrary, the individual formulation becomes a subject of an
“exceptional verificator” (Hytych, 2008a), who verifies the
meanings, ideas and practices served by the culture by their
own experiencing. In addition he has got a cultural store of
knowledge for interpersonal sharing, which is formulated in
system of Abdhidhamma (see Frýba, 1996, 2003a; Nyánaponika,
1998). For most Czech respondents the activity is consumed by
intensive individual formulating of the meanings related to
relegion chosen from heterogeneous plurality of various
spiritual traditions. While in Sri Lanka the passive pole of
the axis means the ritual consumption, in the Czech Republic we
can find there either the unknown or uncertainty or different
means of ignoring the fact of death, like suppression,
generalization, camouflage or not attaching any importance to
it.
The existing fact in both explored cultures is a positive
deviation from the norm exercised in everyday life. While they
are different in many aspects, three similar facts can be seen:
the first one is the ability to cope with the fact of death
actively and to use the confronting aspect of the existence
finality for the life standard improvement. The awareness of
death create the scales, where the priorities can be clarified,
the meaningful decisions can be made and the actions can be
undertaken. The other fact is using the accepting attitude both
towards the fact of death and towards the various forms of
experiencing that is provoked by the awareness of death. The
third one is the predominant orientaton on the personal
experience as a source of knowledge and wisdom
A key skill exercised in both cultures is an ability to accept
the reality in the way I perceive and experience it even in its
unpleasant aspects. Moreover, the cultural store of knowledge
situated in Sri Lanka offers the explicitly formulated methods
of key skills, especially mindfulness (sati, pali).
Psychological and psychotereapetic use of mindfulness has been
very popular in euro-american culture in last decade not only
for coping with the fact of death (Ott et al., 2005), but also
in a wide range of its application in psychotherapy and the
well-being improvement (Didonna, 2008; Brown, Ryan, Creswell,
2007). …víceméně
