The basis for the study and comprehension of biodiversity and its conservation lies in the accurate and comprehensive description and classification of individual species. Errors, and subsequent chaos, in the field of phylogeny and taxonomy can lead to a range of issues. Despite significant research and numerous published studies in this domain, one of the least explored genera is the Crocidura genus, which boasts 217 species, making it the most species-rich genus among mammals. The taxonomy of these shrews is particularly intricate due to their conserved morphology and limited genetic data. New species continue to be identified, with ongoing debates about their classification and varying opinions from different authors. As a result, the phylogenetic position of certain species remains unresolved, creating a somewhat chaotic classification landscape. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to enhance our understanding of the species diversity of Afrotropical Crocidura shrews (i.e., about 112 valid species currently), their distribution, and evolutionary history, using a molecular genetic approach to address the uncertainties in these areas. The student will consolidate existing knowledge of the taxonomy and phylogeny of African Crocidura, outlining their relationships through the creation of a phylogenetic tree based on mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences (CytB). These sequences will be sourced from public databases, field samples, and international collaborators provided by the supervisor. Additionally, the student will map the distribution of these species, comparing it to available distribution maps and assessing the correlation between species complexes and their distribution. The work will be complemented by a brief comparison of their morphologies. More specifically, the objectives are as follows: 1. Provide an overview of Crocidura species in sub-Saharan Africa, including details about their habitats, basic measurements, and distribution. 2. Create maps illustrating the distribution of species and/or subspecific lineages using location data from specimens confirmed through CytB sequencing. 3. Develop the most comprehensive CytB phylogeny by incorporating all available sequences and interpret the result regarding morphological, taxonomical, and genetic discrepancies. The completed thesis will offer a clear overview of the diversity of Afrotropical shrews within the Crocidura genus, laying the groundwork for the selection of taxa for more robust analyses using genomic data.
