I will be dealing with a method of using stories which is possible to be used while teaching English language. This method is quite common while teaching a group of children (Andrew Wright, Priscilla Osborne) but I would like to focus on this method while one-to-one teaching. To be more specific, I will focus on the fact whether the individual learners can benefit from using stories and how. I have got some experience in using stories in one-to-one teaching. I was inspired by Andrew Wright and his various activities. Other resources which I used are by Gail Ellis and Jean Brewster, and Priscilla Osborne. Stories are considered to be very suitable kind of motivation. Besides, if we include appropriate activities which influence all language areas, learners can learn to use the particular foreign language more spontaneously. My aim will be to explore what benefits using stories brings to children in one-to-one teaching. In my research I am going to design and teach a series of lessons with activities connected to a storybook with an 11-year-old girl. Subsequently, I am going to observe and record her reaction and knowledge during our lessons. Afterwards, I am going to analyse the data collected in my pedagogical diary, the data from the pre-test and post-test written by the girl and also the data from the final interview with the girl. 1)Organisation of my procedure: a. 1. 4. – 31. 7. 2013 – studying of the resources, writing of the theoretical part b. 1.8. – 31. 8. 2013 – practical part (creating a serie of lessons, teaching the lessons) d. 1. 9 – 31. 10 – processing of the collected data e. 1. 11 – 28.2. 2013 – completion of my bachelor thesis I would like to take advantage of results from this research in my future work with children. I hope that I gradually find out more about teaching young learners with the use of storybooks and I will verify my assumptions about the benefits of this method.
