T-shape skills in university environment
Sisay Tefera Mamo
Abstract
The growing complexity of engineering and technology-oriented fields demands professionals with both deep disciplinary expertise and strong interdisciplinary and collaborative capabilities. This competency profile is commonly described as the T-shaped professional. Although T-shaped competencies are widely discussed, their systematic integration into technical university curricula remains insufficiently …více
Zadání práce
The thesis investigates the awareness and implementation of "T-shaped" competency models within the environment of the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU). The core problem lies in the traditional silo-based approach to technical education, which may hinder the multidisciplinary flexibility required by the modern IT industry. The research combines two complementary methodological approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current situation. First, an analysis of curricular materials (e.g., course syllabi and program descriptions) will be conducted to identify the skills and competencies developed. This will be complemented by empirical inquiry among faculty members or students, aimed at capturing perceptions and interpretations of competency development. The gathered data will be benchmarked against existing datasets from both previous academic studies and IT industry standards. The primary outputs of the work are:
- Survey Design & Execution: A validated survey instrument distributed to CTU faculty and students aimed at assessing the current awareness and perception of T-shaped skills.
- Algorithmic Syllabus Audit via LLM: Design and implementation of an automated analytical pipeline utilizing a Large Language Model (LLM). This algorithm will systematically process and evaluate CTU course syllabi to objectively measure their alignment with T-shaped learning principles, ensuring a scalable, data-driven approach.
- Gap Identification: A clear, data-backed assessment of the missing links between CTU's current siloed curriculum design and the modern IT industry's demand for versatile professionals.
- Recommendations: A set of targeted, practical recommendations for CTU on how to systematically embed multidisciplinary education into their existing technical programs.
