Anotace

The course focuses on systematic theoretical understanding of psychological processes relevant to clinical dental practice. 


The course emphasizes the relationship between bodily and psychological processes within the psychosomatic paradigm and introduces an understanding of brain functioning from the perspective of predictive processing. These approaches provide a systematic explanation of pain perception, the role of expectations, the placebo/nocebo effect, and variability in patients’ subjective experiences.


The course further introduces theoretical models of motivation and behavior change, basic approaches to psychotherapy and psychological interventions in medicine, and the concept of empathy as a regulated process with a neurophysiological basis.


The aim of the course is for students to understand the key mechanisms underlying patients’ experiences and behavior and to interpret them within contemporary psychological and neuroscientific models.

Výstupy z učení

Students will be able to:

  • explain the relationship between psychological and somatic processes based on the psychosomatic paradigm
  • interpret the emergence of pain and the role of expectations in the context of predictive processing
  • compare basic models of motivation and behavior change applicable in healthcare
  • characterize the principles of major psychotherapeutic approaches and their limitations in medicine
  • characterize empathy and compassion and their significance in medical practice
  • integrate individual models into a coherent framework for understanding patient behavior

Teaching is delivered in the form of lectures supplemented by case-based examples and guided discussions. Emphasis is placed on explaining theoretical models, their relationship to clinical practice, and understanding the psychological mechanisms involved in everyday dental care.
Způsob ověření výstupů z učení a požadavky na ukončení
The course is completed upon fulfillment of the requirements established by the lecturers, particularly regarding orientation in the covered topics and understanding of key concepts.
Náhradní absolvování
This course cannot be completed in an alternative form, as it is based on direct participation in face-to-face teaching conducted at the university.
