The thesis deals with the issue of a stative progressivity in English. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the description and comparison of the different theories and approaches towards verbs, aspect and the issue of using stative verbs with the progressive aspect. Three main approaches to this issue are identified: the change of meaning theories, the theories of aspectual coercion and the theories of aspectual choice. These theories are subsequently verified by a corpus analysis of a chosen group of verbs in the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The results show that while the change of meaning theory does not apply for the chosen group of verbs, both the aspectual coercion theory and the theory of aspectual choice are confirmed. No link between the raw frequency of a verb and the frequency of its use with the stative progressive was discovered, but the composition of results confirms the phenomenon of stative progressivity is far more widespread in the american English.
