The thesis will focus on verbal as well as multimodal resources that teachers use while eliciting relevant answers from their learners. The aim of the thesis will be to investigate how the verbal and multimodal resources teachers use to pursue relevant responses from learners function. In other words, how these prompts stimulate learners to produce appropriate answers. I will observe which practices employed by teachers create learning opportunities for learners and which, on the other hand, fail to do so. In my thesis I will seek answers for the following questions: What verbal and multimodal instruments do teachers use in the classroom to elicit relevant answers from learners? How does the usage of these prompts shape students’ answers and create or hinder their learning opportunities? The thesis will be realised as a qualitative research and data for the research will be gathered by videotaping classroom interactions of teachers and students during English classes. Consequently the data will be analysed using the methods of Conversation Analysis.
